These days, people on the streets are all toking abt the same topics..
U tok abt community issues, it's gota be H1N1..If the topic is on movies, u r bound to hear pple giving their after thoughts on Transformers..N if u skip the topic to entertainment, no prizes for guessing it right, yupz, EVERYBODY's tokin abt the demise of MJ.
With all due respect to MJ, but all this furor abt his death is fast getting on my nerves. N nope, it's got notink to do wif MJ. It's abt the society that I m having issues with.
As a disclaimer, I must say, I too, acknowledge that MJ has been a great musician cum entertainer. And definately, his contributions to the music industry is undisputable. Infact, till this very day, I can remember my exhilaration when I 1st lay my hands on his "Dangerous" album. If my ailing memory has not failed mi, I rem that I bought his cassette (yes, back then, we r toking abt cassette tapes oni) for either $10 or $12. N boy, in that era, that sum of $ is considered as an "extravagant luxury good" for a pri sch kid. So yes, I had been a fan of MG at some point of time.
However, over the years, his fame was fast overshadowed by his endless streams of scandals n lawsuits.
N that's my whole point, people!
Look, why is it that when he was alive, so many people had ridiculed him as a freak whose numerous plastic surgeries had notoriously gone so wrong? Why had people scoffed at him for being a pedophile who shamelessly prey on innocent kids in his Neverland Ranch?
N suddenly, now that he's dead, millions of people had come forward to proclaim their never-ending love n support for the "Legend That Lives Forever in Our Heart"? Just look at the no of fanclub groups that had sprung up in Facebook ever since his death was announced. Somewhere closer, just look at your own friends' Facebook's msg. Godz, i cant even rem hw many of my frens had changed their FB's profile msg as a tribute to MJ.
I am completely baffled and perplexed by this worldwide "phenomenon".
Put it this way, how many of us had actually bother to listen to MJ's songs over the past decade? Perhaps, for all we know, if these millions of so-called fans had show their ardent support throughout the years, purchasing MJ's albums or watsoever, he may not need to so eagerly make a comeback, thus dying during preparations for his LA concert. Speculations remain rife that he had been overly injected due to his gruelling schedule for the concerts. One thing for sure, if those die-hard fans had contribute their support in a more practical manner, their idol may not have die in poverty.
Truth is, along the way, MJ lost his fame and slipped into decline.
As such, let's all face it; why is the world suddenly so shaken n saddened by his death?
We lost a talent; we lament abt the loss. Understandable.
But to go all melancholic upon hearing his songs?? Weep upon seeing his videos??Hur Hur.
Unless u r a hardcore fan who has not drop your idol amidst his troubles-ladden later half of his life and u grieve for his death. Yes, totally understandable. N more believable, at least in my opinion.
Other than that, i tink the majority of the population is just grieving for the sake of grieving. Simply becos everyone else is doing so.
And that disgusts me.
I noe I may be over-generalising as Im certain that there are true blue fans of MJ. But the extent of all the hype is bringing out the extreme cynic side of me.
Yes, we all succumb to social norms, yield to pressures of the society. I have no doubts abt that. In all honesty, I do that at times as well. Nevertheless, we shouldn't be "mainstream" for the sake of doing so. And i feel such strong sentiments particularly when it comes to life and death. It's inexplicable; mayb im just weird. Haha.
Anw, i tink i have been rambling for too long. Esp on a topic that's NOMB. (None of my business!) Heez.
Last but not least, much as I respect MJ for being an irreplaceble icon in the music industry, I do nt respect those who use his death as a pretex to gain affilation with the society. This corresponds to how I always have disdain for pple who portrays a certain side of themselves, so that they will be seemingly "The Nice Guy" or "Angels."
Hypocrisy. Yuckz, totally nauseating.
